asbestos There are three types of asbestos fibre, each with it own characteristics blue asbestos or crocidolite is the most harmful.

Inhalation of any of these fibres can cause cancer and other diseases, at present there is no cure for asbestos related diseases and and such it is vital to prevent exposure.

Southwest Environmental only carry out the survey element of the operation, and as such have no preference on the outcome of the report. (Surveyors affiliated with removal contractors may have a vested interest in "finding" asbestos on site.)

We produce a detailed comprehensive survey report with photos, plans (where appropriate) and Test Certificates.

All survey work and testing is conducting in accordance with Approved HSE Code of Practice (MDHS 100)

There are three types of survey:

Type 1 – Location & Assessment Survey

All materials which are not visually identifiable as non-asbestos are presumed to contain asbestos.
No samples are taken.

Type 2 – Standard sampling, Identification & Assessment Survey
(Sampling Survey)

This is HSE's preferred survey.
This survey positively identifies asbestos containing materials (ACMs)
Representative samples are collected and analysed to confirm or refute the Surveyor's judgement.

Type 3 – Full Access Sampling & Identification Surveys. (Pre-demolition/Major Refurbishment Survey)

This survey locates and describes all ACMs in the building and may involve destructive inspection to gain access to all areas. A full sampling programme is undertaken.
