Water pollution can come from a variety of sources, such as industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and sewage. Water pollution can contaminate drinking water and harm aquatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwest-environmental.co.uk\/further%20info\/ecology\/biodiversity_credits.html\">ecosystems<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are quite generic categories, and certainly air and water pollution can occur via contamination with numerous substances, which can include . .\u00a0 plastic.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s break this down a bit:<\/p>\n<h1>A Long List of Negative Impacts<\/h1>\n<p>Below we have a list of impacts that are considered in life cycle assessment, but they are not pollutants. However, they do represent pollutants. The safe level of Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene in soil, is around 60 times lower than that for Arsenic. This does not mean it is 60 times more toxic, but it gives an idea of how nasty Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene is!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boron (hot water soluble)<\/li>\n<li>Sulfate (2:1 water soluble) as SO4<\/li>\n<li>Sulfur (elemental)<\/li>\n<li>Cyanide (free)<\/li>\n<li>Cyanide (total)<\/li>\n<li>Sulfide<\/li>\n<li>Sulfate (total)<\/li>\n<li>Arsenic<\/li>\n<li>Cadmium<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Chromium<\/li>\n<li>Copper<\/li>\n<li>Mercury<\/li>\n<li>Nickel<\/li>\n<li>Lead<\/li>\n<li>Selenium<\/li>\n<li>Zinc<\/li>\n<li>Chromium (hexavalent)<\/li>\n<li>TPH &gt;C6-C10<\/li>\n<li>TPH &gt;C10-C21<\/li>\n<li>TPH &gt;C21-C40<\/li>\n<li>Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons<\/li>\n<li>Naphthalene<\/li>\n<li>Acenaphthylene<\/li>\n<li>Acenaphthene<\/li>\n<li>Fluorene<\/li>\n<li>Phenanthrene<\/li>\n<li>Anthracene<\/li>\n<li>Fluoranthene<\/li>\n<li>Pyrene<\/li>\n<li>Benzo[a]anthracene<\/li>\n<li>Chrysene<\/li>\n<li>Benzo[b]fluoranthene<\/li>\n<li>Benzo[k]fluoranthene<\/li>\n<li>Benzo[a]pyrene<\/li>\n<li>Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene<\/li>\n<li>Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene<\/li>\n<li>Benzo[g,h,i]perylene<\/li>\n<li>Total (of 16) PAHs<\/li>\n<li>Benzene<\/li>\n<li>Toluene<\/li>\n<li>Ethyl benzene<\/li>\n<li>m- &amp; p-Xylene<\/li>\n<li>o-Xylene<\/li>\n<li>Phenols (total)<\/li>\n<li>pH<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Wonder Chemicals<\/h1>\n<p>One of humans&#8217; favorite way of causing really bad pollution is with new wonder chemicals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Asbestos<\/li>\n<li>DDT<\/li>\n<li>PCB<\/li>\n<li>PFAS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order of appearance the above short list of chemical has been released into the environment before anyone really understand them.<\/p>\n<p>Asbestos was thought to be a very good flame \/ heat resistant material (which is was) but people overlooked (or ignored) it crystal structure and the effect that would have on delicate lung tissue. We are still cleaning up asbestos now, 40 years after is was passed out.<\/p>\n<p>DDT &amp; PCB are both very &#8220;persistent&#8221; chemicals they don&#8217;t break down, as so are prone to bioaccumulation. Which is why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/maps-and-charts\/blood-pcb-levels-in-humans-observed-across-the-arctic\">inuit<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/groveatlantic.com\/book\/silent-snow\/\">mother&#8217;s breast milk has been found to be toxic<\/a>, despite them living in a seemingly pristine environment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_545\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-545\" class=\"wp-image-545 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/southwest-environmental.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/preview_image-768-b0e74cb6dc467da1e9d7c87530055fd3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southwest-environmental.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/preview_image-768-b0e74cb6dc467da1e9d7c87530055fd3.png 768w, https:\/\/southwest-environmental.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/preview_image-768-b0e74cb6dc467da1e9d7c87530055fd3-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/southwest-environmental.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/preview_image-768-b0e74cb6dc467da1e9d7c87530055fd3-624x373.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blood PCB levels in humans, observed across the Arctic &#8211; https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And more recently a group of chemical associated with fire retardation called PFAS or PFOS, are turning up absolutely everywhere, manufactures have been putting these forever chemicals in paper bags (for grease proofing) and as using them as flame retardants, and now guess what! They are turning up in people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/nov\/28\/forever-chemicals-found-in-drinking-water-sources-across-england\">water supplies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Conclusions<\/h1>\n<p>There are a mesmerising number of ways in which humans can pollute our environment. We can pollute the air, water and the soil. All things we rely on to exist.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a mind boggling number of ways we can impact the planet, and and very long list of substances to do it with.<\/p>\n<p>We are still learning about all of these interactions, and substances, and we are very prone to repeating mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>The one to watch is <a href=\"https:\/\/southwest-environmental.co.uk\/blog\/2024\/11\/05\/why-plastic-pollution-is-the-most-important-environmental-issue\/\">plastic pollution<\/a> .
