For Dishwashers, the EU Ecolabel Background Report is one of the most rigorous. It essentially demands that a machine performs better than the standard "Class A" energy label while ensuring the appliance is built to be repaired rather than replaced.
The EU Ecolabel for dishwashers represents the "best of the best" in kitchen appliances. While the standard EU Energy Label focuses mainly on power and water, the Ecolabel Background Report goes deeper, looking at the toxicity of components, the noise of the motor, and the availability of spare parts for a decade.
Follow these five steps to navigate the certification for dishwashers.
To earn the "Flower," your machine must exceed basic eco-design requirements.
The Index: You must calculate the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) and the Water Consumption per cycle.
The Threshold: Typically, Ecolabelled dishwashers must use significantly less water (often under 10 liters for a standard 12-place setting) compared to average market models.
Low Power Modes: The machine must have a "delay start" and a "standby" mode that consumes less than 0.5W.
The Background Report insists that saving energy shouldn't mean dirty plates.
Cleaning & Drying Index: Your machine must pass standardized tests using "reference soil" (standardized food stains). It must achieve a Cleaning Performance Index and a Drying Performance Index that prove it is as effective as the highest-performing non-eco machines.
The Eco Program: This specific cycle must be the default setting or clearly highlighted to ensure the consumer actually achieves the savings promised.
Because modern homes are often open-plan, acoustic comfort is a sustainability metric.
Acoustic Testing: The machine is tested in a semi-anechoic chamber.
The Limit: The airborne acoustical noise emissions must be extremely low (often below 42–45 dB for premium models). The Background Report requires manufacturers to provide data on how they dampened the motor and pump vibrations.
This is a core pillar of the EU "Right to Repair" strategy within the Ecolabel.
7 to 10 Year Rule: You must guarantee that essential spare parts (pumps, spray arms, gaskets, and racks) are available to professional repairers and end-users for at least 10 years after the last unit of the model is placed on the market.
Fast Delivery: The report requires that these parts be delivered within 15 working days to ensure the appliance is fixed quickly.
A dishwasher contains a mix of plastics, metals, and electronics. The Background Report audits these materials:
Plasticizers: Phthalates and certain flame retardants in the plastic casing and hoses are strictly restricted.
Recycled Content: Manufacturers are encouraged to use recycled plastic for non-structural parts, and all plastic parts over 25g must be clearly marked with their material type to aid end-of-life recycling.
The biggest hurdle for manufacturers is often the "User Instructions" section. The Background Report is very specific: you must include a "Dosing Guide" for detergents and clear instructions on how to load the machine to maximize water efficiency. If these instructions aren't prominent, the Competent Body will send the application back for revision.

The EU Ecolabel represents a gold standard for environmental excellence in white goods. For manufacturers of dishwashers, achieving this certification demonstrates a commitment to reducing the ecological footprint of the appliance throughout its entire life cycle. This includes everything from the raw materials used in construction to the energy and water consumed during years of daily use.
Southwest Environmental Limited provides the technical authority required to guide manufacturers through the complex "Flower" label application process. We assist in compiling the necessary evidence for energy efficiency indexes, noise levels, and the sustainability of plastic and metal components, ensuring your product stands out in a competitive European market.
Once awarded, the EU Ecolabel allows your dishwashers to be marketed with a trusted environmental seal in every EU member state. We support applications for products being distributed in:
