Cycle Maintenance Training

It is often a requirement of a Travel Plan that Cycle Maintenance Training be provided to Staff and / Site Users so as to increase there confidence on a Bicycle. It is quite common for a person not to be able to fix a puncture, or even realise their chain requires oiling.

haynes_bike_book_shot_lo_resThese small maintenance and repair tasks can undermine cycling, as a useful mode of transport. After all if a bike is broken or mafunctioning it will not get ridden.

Southwest Environmental Limited offer bespoke training programs to anyone who requires them. We provide lively teaching, course literature* and a positive growth mindset teaching experience.

The course not only provides information on what to do if things go wrong, but also on how to prevent them going wrong in the first place. For example, many people would be discouraged from cycling based on the thought that they would get a puncture, however there are many choices available to cyclists which would see the number of punctures they have in a given year reduced to practically zero.

Even for the experienced sports cyclist, Practical Cycling or  Utility Cycling (such as commuting) requires a different set of priorities in terms of equipment choices and maintenance requirements . . or aiming to avoid those maintenance requirements where possible.

If you have any question relating to increasing cycling as a mode of transport then please contact southwest environmental limited for help or advice, initial consultations are always free of charge.

Quick 5 Point Cycle Maintenance Check

Fixing you bike when you on the road side or out in the country side is not as easy as doing it at home. So why not carry out a few quick checks before you leave? These checks are designed to minimise risks to you. There are many other checks to make sure you bike works well, and is comfortable, but these below essential checks are important to prevent injury.

1 - Tire Squeeze

A flat tire is one of the most common problems you can have on a bike. Before you set out a simple maintenance check is to squeeze you tires with your fingers, it should be firm, like squeezing a football or net ball. If it is soft then you may a have a puncture, or you tire may require topping up.

2 - Brakes

Apply you breaks and then lean forwards and backwards on the bike in turn to check the wheel lock. Quickly check the pads to make sure they do not rub on the tire.

3 - Wheel Nuts or Quick Release

Check your wheel nuts and or quick release levers to check they are done up properly. One of the single worst things that can happen on a bike is for the front wheel to fall off when you are riding it.

4 - Handle Bars

Stand astride the bike, and grip the front wheel between your knees try to turn the handle bars. They should not move independently of the front wheel. Try to rotate the bars (like a motorcycle throttle) to check they are tight. The bars should not rotate in the stem, nor should the grips rotate on the bars.

5 - Potential Tangles

Check you bags & clothing to check it cannot get stuck in the wheel when you are going along. A jumper around the waste can easily get droop down and get stuck in the back wheel. Never hang stuff on you handle bars, a jammed front wheel can result in serious bodily mangling.

*"Course Literature" is provision of one copy per candidate of the "Bike Book" by Haynes, which in its 7th edition is probably the finest single reference point to bike maintenance and repair there is.

Sustainable Transport: Cycle Maintenance Training

Cycle maintenance training is an essential component of modern sustainable transport strategies. By providing individuals with the skills to maintain their own equipment, we remove one of the primary barriers to consistent cycling: the fear of mechanical failure. This service is often integrated into broader sustainability strategies to encourage long-term behavioral change in commuting patterns.

Role in Planning and Travel Plans

For many new developments, a robust Travel Plan is a mandatory requirement to secure planning consent. Cycle maintenance initiatives serve as high-impact "soft measures" that demonstrate a genuine commitment to reducing car dependency. Key benefits include:

Integration with Environmental Impact Assessments

Within the framework of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), sustainable travel options are critical for mitigating traffic-related emissions. Our bicycle cycling consultancy services help bridge the gap between technical infrastructure design and actual user uptake. By offering on-site training workshops, developers can actively improve the modal split targets outlined in their planning statements.

Professional Technical Support

With over 15 years of experience in environmental geology and sustainability planning, SWEL provides the technical authority required to implement effective transport mitigation. Our approach ensures that cycle maintenance training is not just a token gesture, but a functional part of your project's environmental delivery plan. Whether you are aiming for Net Zero targets or simply looking to meet local authority transport requirements, we provide the expertise to move your project forward.
