SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER IN THE UK AND WORLD
WORLD WATER USAGE - FUTURE
PROBLEMS
WORLD WATER USAGE - PRESENT SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES
This section of the website serves as a technical archive, originally authored nearly 17 years ago. While the core principles of water scarcity remain consistent, the regulatory landscape and the severity of climate projections have shifted significantly since these records were first established. This archive provides a historical baseline for how we once perceived water risk in the UK.
Since the late 2000s, environmental consultancy has had to adapt to more extreme weather patterns and more stringent legislative requirements. The way we assess drought risk today is far more integrated than it was in 2009.
By reviewing our archival pages on past water use and present water use (as seen in 2009), we can track the efficacy of UK water policy over the last two decades. While per-capita water use has seen improvements through better fixture design, the total pressure on the network has increased due to significant population growth in water-stressed regions like the South East and London.
Historical data remains vital for current Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) as it provides the long-term context needed to understand "normal" versus "extreme" conditions. Whether we are drafting a sustainability report or a Climate Change Adaptation strategy, this archive reminds us of the trajectory we have travelled. With over 900 projects delivered since the inception of this data, SWEL remains at the forefront of translating historical environmental trends into robust, future-proof planning solutions.
